PIRATE OF LOVE
History - Discography - TV performances

Like in 1988, Sabrina was omnipresent on Italian TV in 1989. Earlier that year, she co-hosted Odiens, a TV show in which she performed almost all the songs from her second album Super Sabrina. After the release of Like a yo-yo/Funky girl, her label decided to keep on promoting the album by releasing three 12" during the year. The first one to be released was Pirate of love. Composed by Giorgio Moroder (who also produced Like a yo-yo), this song was actually a cover version which many fans didn't know at the time (and maybe Sabrina neither). Indeed, this song had been recorded two years before by a young Italian singer: Giorgia (Fiori). With a deep and raucous voice, Giorgia participated three times at the San Remo Festival (in 1983, 1984 and 1988) and released a few records between 1983 and 1988 without real success, before becoming a renowned photographer in the 90s. Till then, Giorgia had only sung in Italian. Pirate of love was her first single in English and was published in three countries: Italy, Germany and France. If a 7" was issued in February 1986 amongst general indifference, a 12" was also released, including the single version, a remix, an instrumental version and a second track in English, Take it or leave it (also on the B-side of the 7"), but not written by Moroder / Whitlock. It seems that an album titled Pirate of love was also released.

Pirate of Love was the only "dark" song recorded by Sabrina at this time and it was probably one of the most interesting songs on the album, proving that Sabrina was at her best when she sang with a deep voice (which would be later more obvious on the album Maschio dove sei ). Sabrina seemed to like it a lot as she sang it live during her concerts in Moscow and performed it many times on Italian television. On February 7, 1992, as she was co-hosting Belleze sulla neve, Sabrina made a great live performance of the song, in a slow and nostalgic version.

As later for Doctor's orders and Sex, Pirate of love wasn't released on 7". Strangely, no remix was produced for the 12" while an extended version of Doctor's orders was released on the B-side of the record.
